description=Four-engine flying boat. Sikorsky built 3 S-40s in 1931 for Pan Am. All upgraded to S-40A in mid-1930s. Powered by 4 Pratt & Whitney Hornet T2D1 (R-1690) supercharged engines of 660 hp each. Retractable landing gear were removed, and the planes were operated as flying boats. "Southern Clipper" was 3rd S-40 built.  Retired from Pan Am 1940, converted to all-freight carrier and used by U.S. Navy 1941-43.  Returned to Pan Am 1943, and used as high-density passenger carrier until 1944.
